The NAFTA issue has been souring American political life for over twenty years, but recent massive pressure on the matter from the new US administration seems to be producing meagre results.

We do not yet have the full details of the final agreement, nor exactly how Canada will feature in the deal, but the new arrangement looks very much like the old NAFTA set-up. Setting aside some symbolic moves on the automotive sector that could push up prices for vehicles manufactured in the area if they really are applied, trade relations between the three North American countries are set to be broadly unchanged. This agreement suggests that the true aim behind Donald Trump’s approach really is political visibility rather than a true overhaul of the infrastructure for world trade.
